About Us

Pink Technique is a reference to the pink noise technique in which a sample of pink noise is added to an audio mix down to act as a reference for comparing all other tracks to.  The idea is that each track can be adjusted in volume so that it is barely audible when listened to along with the pink noise.  Theoretically, this will create a mix where everything has roughly the same perceived loudness.  Some digital audio workstations (DAWs) have pink noise generators that can be used for this purpose. The fundamental error in the idea is that some elements are generally much louder than others.  For example, the kick drum is generally much louder in the mix than the hi hat.  Sometimes synthesizer patches have very low volume in the mix and are intended to add ambiance, not compete with vocals or percussion instruments.  The technique can be very useful in getting a quick balance of instruments which are intended to be roughly the same in loudness or volume.  Pink noise has the benefit of registering consistently from low frequencies to high frequencies on audio meters, contributing to their value as a reference.

In marketing terms, the idea of pink noise is the effort required to be heard above the crowd.  In today’s age of modern media, web based media outlets such as TMZ, Perez Hilton, Sway, DJVlad, etc. offer niche media that appeals to specific demographic markets and reaches a large percentage of the target demographic.  These kinds of outlets can be seen as the primary sources of content within their respective audiences.

The marketing ideas of reach and frequency still hold true, reach referring to the number of people the messages reaches, and frequency referring to how often the message is heard.  But in this new era of marketing, reaching the correct demographic has become the primary goal, and niche outlets are the primary vehicles.  This is the new reality of marketing in specific industries.  Specialized media outlets often ran by people with no formal training in business or marketing control the direction of entire industries.  YouTube and other forms of new media have redefined the rules of marketing and democratized who has influence.  It is in this spirit of media democratization that pinktechnique.com hopes to collectively build an understanding of marketing in the modern era, especially as it relates to audio, video, gaming, and other forms of digital media.
